Lukas' half lidded gaze usually misleads people into thinking he was uninterested in anything but superficial small talk. He encourages such misconceptions by pretending to be distracted a lot, while he is actually being very attentive. He knows more than he lets on an can surprise people at unexpected moments with his eavesdropped knowledge. As most people, he is especially curious about things that aren't meant for his ears.

It helps that he has an eye for detail. He is observant and clever enough to decipher and analyze body language on the spot, which makes it hard to lie to or hide things from him without a similar talent for pretense. Within the blink of an eye he catches on to small tremors in one's voice, the twitch of a muscle or a curious choice of words and will drill right into a persons weak spot. He doesn't treat things he finds out that way very discreetly. It's much more likely that he uses it against the other person, in an immature attempt to tease or hurt them, often including private information in petty fights in public to embarrass his opponent or worse.

His methods are ruthless and violent, casualties are a part of equivalent exchange and inevitable in his eyes. This doesn't mean that he provokes it. It just means that he has a very clear set of priorities when approaching a situation. In a personal predicament, he often fails to show sympathy or mercy to the opposing party. Self-centered as he is, he only has his own best interest in mind. He can't really relate to other's people's feelings on an emotional basis. In reverse this also means, that he doesn't forgive and forget. He is as vengeful as they come.

A bit impatient, especially if in his opinion the information could have been condensed, he doesn't make a very good subordinate. He is ambitious, but fickle. As it happens, he is obsessed with something else every month to the point of addiction. Those obsessions can be truely anything. Actually, "volatile" would perfectly sum up his personality in one word.

Mannerisms: Typically Lukas is watching people from the corners of his eyes. A very annoying habit of his is clucking his tongue once loudly to express amazement. He did it once and it annoyed Xiaolian so much that he adopted this habit forever. He rocks forward and backwards on his toes when he is forced to wait and gets impatient and absentmindedly plays with little metal buttons he always carries in his pockets.

History

Growing up the son of a cooper and a teacher, Lukas had the privilege of education from a very young age. He started talking before he was able to walk and learned how to read by constantly asking his mother about pronounciation a year earlier than most kids his age. Unfortunately, he only ever learned what he was interested in and neglected all the rest. Instead, he took to roaming the streets, soon knowing every street and every back alley and every person who knew them as well as he did.

Xiaolian lived in his neighbourhood back then and they hit it off. She was someone who could keep up with his fast pace and wild ideas, even adding her own until they worked somehow. Soon they were inseparable, she was his best friend for years to come. His initial inability to pronounce her name earned her the nickname "Sha" in the neighbourhood, which stuck, even when he finally got it. Thanks to her he speaks a few words of Xingese, although most of them shouldn't be repeated in front of women or children.

At the age of 13-14 the two of them discovered alchemy. Lukas was hooked. It didn't take long for him to suggest to Xiaolian that they should try it out and after missing the local fireworks show, a suitable excuse was found to put their meager skills to use. The day went down in flames. Need I say more? Of course they blew it, attempting to create fireworks with alchemy, lighting up the result and burning down a tenement in the process. To their luck, it wasn't the State military who found them, but Alexis. After a stern lecture, they pleaded themselves into apprenticeship.

The following years they studied under Alexis. It was surprising enough that Lukas didn't lose interest in his current obsession, but even when it wasn't an obsession anymore and he was able to eat and sleep properly again (instead constantly scribbling small fat birds, his new thing), his interest never faded. During those times things between him and Xiaolian started to shift. Then puberty hit and launched Lukas into a rebellious phase of epic proportions.

In a fit of rage at the age of 16 he started taking drugs. Of course he knew how dangerous and stupid it was, he did it anyway, probably as a way of punishing everyone around him for their very human mistakes. This cost him dearly. His already bad relationship with his parents reached an all time low and they kicked him out. Entirely failing to see how he was partially to blame for what happened, he still holds a grudge against them for not supporting him. He lived on the streets for a while and finally moved in with Alexis. He pretty much lived at his place before already but now it was official.

A few months later he was finally back on track, but still not quite out of teenage rebellion, so Xiaolian and Lukas took the State Alchemist Exam, against the very reasonable advice of Alexis. The failure was swift and brutal. They crawled back to their master and finally started taking everything a bit more seriously. The next years the two rascals became as much of model students as they could be. Now, that he wasn't busy with feeling sorry for himself and raging at the world anymore, the competitiveness with Xiaolian started once again, however, they could never quite return to the way things were.

When they became 24, they took the State Alchemist Exam again, this time properly prepared, and passed.

Relationships

Xiaolian Lockwood - His former co-student under Alexis. They were childhood friends and inseparable for a long time. However, after shooting at her during the state alchemist exam, their already damaged friendship broke completely.
Froy Klein - His coworker. He got into something of a prank war with her by playing a practical joke on her shortly after they met. He admires her spirit.
Atticus Ainsworth - His new roommate. He considers Atticus to be somewhat of a lost puppy and is immensely amused by Atticus' awkwardness. After not even a few hours he already convinced him to go to a bar and hit on a waitress in a tea shop, things Atticus probably never did before. Lukas is most likely the worst influence in Major Ainsworth's life yet. Still, they became friends now. I fear for Major AInsworth's future.
Abigail Ainsworth - He heard a few things about her thanks to Atticus. Now that she is Xiaolian's rommate, he avoids her a little.
Sebastian Butler - A field medic Lukas met when he got send to the medical bay for a training accident. He got sent there twice just within the first week. Sebastian seems to consider him a reckless Idiot and Lukas just enjoys pissing him off by being a royal pain.
Li Xu - He helped her out hunting down a thief. Now he likes to hold her up. She doesn't mind.
Anxi Wu -They have a lot in common. First and foremost they like cats and frequently try to smuggle them into the barracks. Second, they are both very social and friendly. They quickly bonded and she was Lukas' new best friend until she dropped him for Burt.
Malik Amirmoez -Another catlover. They bond over fat cats and whenever Anxi and Lukas succeed in smuggling in cats, Lukas brings them to Malik too, so he can pet them.
Corinne Lukainov - He met her shortly before the exam, they were both in the public library researching alchemy and realized the other was taking the test, too. Living in neighbouring rooms came as somewhat of a surprise.
Jacqueline Wynters - After she dropped a shopping bag, Lukas helped her getting her groceries home. There he accidentally found out about her husband situation.
Ying-Xin Zhan - It is very hard to determine if they are friend or hate each others guts. They have been through a few very compromising situations and Lukas is beyond done with being manhandled and treated like an angry child. He filed a formal complaint against him.
Oscar Cadwell - Who the fuck...oh, Emil Lambert. They treat each other with caution, they seem to have way more in common than their employer. It's a it of a mystery how they never ran into each other even though they lived in the same city.
Klaus Lacemaker - A pure, polite and innocent individual who must be corrupted. Also, a fountain of information, Lukas considers him very useful, especially since he found out he has a link to Oscar.
Alexandria Arrington - Unfortunately he never got into her pants, but at least he helped set her up with Lucien.
Ezria Staden - She is another fountain of info, although her knowledge is more specific. He finds her endless chattering annoying and has often hinted that he prefers her gagged.
Hubert Valentine - Burt dubbed Lukas Little Red and he doesn't really appreciate it.
Junior Hart - Poor Junior never found out that Lukas wasn't a senior officer. Lukas is endlessly amused by this and from time to time makes him run an errand for him.
Colonel Hart - They both seem to be suspicious of each other and Lukas is rather frustrated to be in a position where he can't stand his ground in front of him. He is extremely careful about pissing Hart off... as careful as he can be.
Tracy Campbell - He likes this woman a lot and uses every chance to hang out at her shop.
Sarge - UTTER UNADULTERATED LOATHING! Lukas has never been very good at taking orders and Sarge's personality and methods make it almost impossible for him to go along with it. Lukas claims his disciplinary measures were "cruel and unusual punishment".
Farran Armstrong - extremely beautiful human being what the fuck
Miles Fairchild - His jailer. He does not want to work for him ever again, he has polished enough medical equipment for three lifetimes.
Prisoner 63 - Lukas was the one to arrest him on Moe's orders and also the first to interrogate him. He gave him a matching collar to Ying.
Alexis - His master. He rarely ever mentions him.

Lukas has a different obsession roughly every month. Current obsession: Biting his nails.
His master's house is full of cats from around the end of January, when his obsession was adopting stray cats.
Has a long and lively backstory with "Sha" aka Xiaolian Lockwood, since they knew each other ever since they were small.
Lukas is not a big fan of animals, especially reptiles, amphibians and insects.
He involuntarily became part of "the Gaggle" at it's foundation after he convinced Atticus and Sebastian to accompany him to a bar.
He has a bit of a reputation for sleeping around.
For some reason Junior Hart considers him a senior officer. Even though Lukas lives right next to him and trains at the same training grounds, he still didn't find out.
He is an exceptional dancer, plays the piano and has surprisingly good manners, when he really tries. His mother was a teacher for young ladies, so he often had to play practice partner for her students.
The only Xingese words he knows are swear words and Things like Hello and Thank you.

After a rather awkward drunk night at the bar, Xiaolian, Ying and Lukas woke up in one bed. Nothing happened though, they were very relieved about that.
Right now there are four children in the world who have the right to alimony paid by a certain Lukas Ravel, by the end of the story there are probably six of them. So far he has no idea they exist.
There is hardly anyone by now who doesn't know Lukas, be it because of his hair or because he just seems to be present whenever something happens.
Has a transmutation circle tattooed on the inside of his wrist.
